4th March 2007 - Yorkshire Area (Championship)

Adjudicators: Nigel Boddice & Geoffrey Whitham
Test Piece: Isaiah 40, Robert Redhead
Venue: St George’s Hall, Bradford

This year’s area piece was hard, and featured some very difficult sections for the band. The percussion parts were fairly straightforward for the most part, but quite exposed, with a couple of solos for the percussion section. There were some passages marked “blow on wind chimes” for which we obtained a set of wind chimes from someone’s house, and the playing of them provoked much hilarity in rehearsals. The rehearsals leading up to the contest were very positive, and the band were playing better than ever on the day before. They were confident of doing well on the day.

On contest day the band met mid afternoon to have a rehearsal and wait for the draw. The band drew 5th, which was after a big clump of good bands (Black Dyke drew number 1) and so after a short break and further rehearsal, we set off to the hall.

We were kept waiting outside in the cold for 15 minutes as the contest was running late, but having got in and got changed we registered and then waited behind stage listening to the performance of Sellers.

Our performance was very good, and there were very flew blemishes. It was, however, slightly below the standard we had set for ourselves in rehearsal, but we still thought it capable of doing well.

It was interesting to note that, of the bands which followed us, most of them chose to stand the trombones up for the big tune at the end. This helped with projecting the tune over the rest of the band, but did make it sound raucous if you happened to be sat in direct line. Standing up players when it was not marked on the score has provoked the wrath of adjudicators at other contests, and often results in a band being placed lower come results time.

All of the other bands I saw also chose to hit orchestral style wind chimes rather than to blow them as marked on the music, which was disappointing.

The final results were:

1. Brighouse & Rastrick, A Morrison, 12, 195
2. Hepworth (Lanson Homes), M Bentham, 9, 194
3. Black Dyke, Dr N Childs, 1, 193
4. Carlton Main Frickley Colliery, R Gray, 13, 192
5. Powerfuel Hatfield Colliery, G O’Connor, 11, 191
6. Yorkshire Imperial Urquhart Travel, R Farr, 8, 190

7. Rothwell Temperance, D Roberts, 5, 189
8. Grimethorpe Colliery, A Withington, 2, 187
9. Sellers International, P McCann, 4, 186
10. Old Silkstone, A Exley, 10, 185
11. YBS, A Ramsay, 3, 183
12. Marsden Silver (Riverhead Brewery), G Williams, 6, 182
13. Drighlington, K Belcher, 7, 180

This was a poor result for the band, as they thought they had played well enough to be up there. Brighouse were, however, outstanding, and fully deserved their win.

The adjudicators remarks were on the whole positive, and commented on the good quality of the percussion section.

Next up is the International Masters Contest in Cambridge at the end of May, where the band will be defending their title, after winning the contest in 2006.

Thanks to:
* Johnny Beattie for helping out on solo trombone
* Craig Gaskell for helping out on the front row

Our best wishes also go to the bands representing Yorkshire at the finals. With us not qualifying, it is perhaps the best five bands possible that are spurring the regional challenge in London.
