1946
Five contests attended again including the third section National Finals at Belle Vue, Manchester which gave rise to well remembered paragraphs in the Yorkshire Evening Post headed “Teacakes for Stamina.”
“The mother of one young soloist who brought along his two young sisters and his grandfather as well was popularly reputed to be be carrying a stone of teacakes”
Food rationing and other restrictions were still in force as a legacy from the war and the meals previously purchased had proved unsatisfactory for young appetites.
The band soloists and quartet parties were beginning to extend their reputations and Derek Ward, cornet, won the Daily Herald North of England Junior Solo Championship whilst Kenneth Dennison, trombone, took the first major honour in his long and distinguished career by winning the Alec Owen Memorial Scholarship.
